Play Sufficiency Assessment the Ludicology Approach

Wales is the first country in the world to legislate for children’s play through the introduction of the Play Sufficiency Duty requiring all Welsh local authorities to assess and secure sufficient play opportunities for children in their areas. In the winter months of 2012/13 Mike and Ben, in their respective roles with Wrexham Council and Glyndwr University, led on the completion of the local authority’s first play sufficiency assessment.

Barnsley Local Authority is passionate about play and its facilitation through their children’s services, including early years, out of school childcare and playwork. We have worked with them over the last few years to deliver some of our well-established courses and to develop bespoke courses to meet particular emerging needs from their service providers. This has seen us deliver training on playful interventions, reflective practice and dynamic risk-benefit assessment; many of which we have return to deliver again as providers change and new settings are developed.
